Dermal Fillers

A sunlit Lower Manhattan sidewalk passes a storefront displaying a facial contour model and cosmetic syringe.

Read the three filler documents in order

Dermal fillers come with three documents: the product labeling, the consent form and any regulator notice about the product. Read them in that order, and read them ahead of the appointment rather than at it.

Filler details to confirm with your injector

Ask these at the consultation.

  1. Which filler goes in? Get the exact product name, then find its labeling.
  2. What does the consent form ask you to accept? Mark every line you do not understand.
  3. Who holds the syringe? Get that person's name and license type.
  4. What should you do if something goes wrong? Get the after-hours contact on paper.
  5. Is there a regulator notice about this product? Search the FDA site by product name.

Seven question pages take one filler question each. Read What after-effects follow filler injections? and Are there risks with dermal fillers? first. Then read Are filler injections painful?, the explainer on how fillers work and How do I choose a filler injector?. Finish with What should you expect with dermal fillers? and Is my filler injector properly licensed?.

Match your filler label to a product type

When a regulator notice reaches you, find whom it applies to and what it asks.

Read the Cleveland Clinic plastic surgery page on dermal fillers and mark anything you want your injector to explain. Then open the FDA list of approved dermal fillers and look for the product named on your labeling. Check the labeling itself for the rest.

Bring the marked pages to an injector whose license you have checked.
