Are filler injections painful?

A woman holds a cold pack to her cheek while speaking with a clinician on a sunny Lower Manhattan sidewalk.

Settle the comfort question before the needle comes out.

Ask which comfort options come with your filler

Ask the provider which comfort options the practice offers for filler and what each one involves. Then ask which sensations to expect during the injection and once it is over.

Find each line on discomfort, both in the chair and at home. Then put these to the injector:

  1. Which filler brand goes in, and may you read its label before the start?
  2. What does each comfort option involve?
  3. What does the form say about discomfort that lingers?
  4. Which number do you ring if the discomfort worries you?

Write your filler pain worries down first

  • List your pain concerns ahead of the appointment.
  • Have the injector's answers noted in your file.
  • Hold off on signing until every line of the form makes sense to you.

Sharpen your comfort questions with two filler references

Read the Cleveland Clinic plastic surgery page on dermal fillers, from a hospital health library. Read its page on what to expect from lip fillers, which also covers types and side effects. Use both to tighten the comfort questions you take to the provider.
