Medical Weight Loss
Collect the weight-loss paperwork ahead of enrollment
Medical weight loss at a provider may involve a prescription medication, a consent form and a follow-up plan. Get each one on paper ahead of enrollment, and read the medication's labeling at home.

Weight-loss terms to pin down on day one
Ask these at the first visit.
- Which medication is proposed? Ask for its exact name and where its label can be read.
- Is it an approved product or a compounded one? Ask, and write down the answer.
- Which terms in the consent form bind you? Circle each term you would need explained.
- Who monitors you, and how often? Ask for names and dates.
- What does stopping involve? Settle it on day one.
Three question pages take one weight-loss question each. Read How much does a medical weight loss program cost to join? first. Then read How does exercise fit into medical weight loss? and How aggressive are the diet plans?.
Look up each weight-loss drug label and notice
Use four sources to make the questions above more precise.
Read the academic medical center's fact sheet on weight loss medications for background on the drugs that come up in your appointment, and find the label for each drug name. Open the FDA questions and answers on drug compounding next to question 2, and note which questions it answers about compounded drugs.
Two papers cover GLP-1 therapies. Check the drug name in the meta-analysis of semaglutide for weight loss in adults without diabetes against your own label. Read the joint advisory on nutritional priorities to support GLP-1 therapy for obesity with question 4 in mind, and ask what support your plan includes.
Bring the labels and your notes to whoever will monitor you.
